Dark Romance

These days, dark romance has become very popular. It has created a fan base for itself and has a lot of avid readers. It features tension between the main characters and the characters are very complex and flawed. It usually features one character who is openly dark – i.e., he or she doesn’t try to hide it. The other character hides his or her dark influences until he or she meets the other character, who makes him or her open up.

Dark romance has darker themes and is riddled with mature content. You should be aware of the content in the book before diving into it. There are morally grey characters and violent plots. The characters have faced a lot of traumatic incidents which made them ‘the way they are.’

When you try to write a dark romance, there are some things that you need to keep in mind. For starters, the characters have to be built well. You need to show off their different layers and complex motives. You can shine a light on their inner demons and personal struggles. You can even give the audience glimpses of their past, making the character more understandable. The character has to be easy to hate and hard to love.

Make sure you decide on an appropriate setting and time. For example, a human trafficker can’t meet the girl who changes him at a mall. A better place for them to meet would be a dark bar where the girl is looking to satisfy her dark impulses. Incidentally, this could be where the trafficker picks his victims.

You can feel free to dive deep into human emotions that might not be suitable in a conventional romance. These emotions can be confusing and utterly unwelcome. Also, make sure to invest time into a good plot. Don’t just make your book about forbidden romance. Give it a purpose. Give it something that makes readers want to know what’s going to happen next.

Examples of dark romance books are the 50 Shades series and the Twisted series.

Readers, beware when you dive into a dark romance. Make sure you know what you are signing up for. If you have some deep inner trauma, this may not be the genre for you. Writers, make sure to include a warning when you publish your work. You wouldn't want to hurt anyone.

Have fun!

  1. Sounds really interesting. Maybe I should have a gander at some of these for "scientific purposes"🤔
