SLP Diaries - Part 7

Today was an unusual session of the Service Learning Program. For the first time, we didn't start the session with a story. We had to dive right into preparations for our performance, on April 16th.

Ohh, I'm pleased to announce that the performance is a Cosplay show. Each child has been given a character, a famous personality, or an animal. We've given them a few sentences to learn, which they will be reciting. Each grade has a couple mentors who have been working on this performance diligently. We aren't going to dress the kids up, but rather give them vibrant name tags that they can flaunt when they speak.

Back to today's session...

My class, second grade, was as energetic as always. Some of the kids remembered what we taught them last week, and recited their lines. Some others needed refreshment. Other kids knew their lines, but needed to be taught to recite them with energy. I had to tell them to say their lines happily.

One child, Rosana, was Indumathi from Chotta Bheem. When she said the word 'princess,' her face lit up and she blushed as she said the word, smiling brightly. Another girl, Monisha, was Dora. She loved mimicking me saying 'Swiper no Swiping.' Jayaram, who was Oggy, knew his lines already and came up to me at least 10 times, repeating them over and over again. Harin, who was Tom (Tom and Jerry) said "I am Tom Cat. My best friend is Tom." He had to be told over and over again that Jerry was his best friend. Sriram, aka Pikachu, had only 5 words to say, which he said on loop. Subashini, who was Heidi, didn't really get the hang of reading English. I had to transcribe the words into Tamil for her to read better. Now... I don't know how to write Tamil very well. I soon realized that almost no one in my team knew how to write Tamil without a prompt. I had to ask the teacher there to write it for the child. (Very embarassing)

Let's just say... the session was very memorable and I'm curious to see what the kids surprise me with next week.
