How To Write in the Second Person Perspective

Now, this is a bit different from what I usually write but it's something I tried and it changed the way I think.

So, the point is pretty simple. It's just basic grammar. You need to look at the tense of the verbs. When you use the word 'you' in the sentence, or are talking about the reader/protagonist, the verb should be in simple present tense. When you are talking about another character in the story, for example, you are watching someone doing something, the verb should be in simple continuous tense.

For example: "You open your eyes and inhale deeply."

"Night falls before the thief returns. 'Please, spare me,' he cries."

These are things that are different from when you write something in the first or the third person perspective. The next thing is that you have to put yourself in the character's shoes. You can't be separated and away from the actions and what the character is doing and feeling. You need to be able to completely immerse the reader and turn them into the character. To do that, you have to know everything about your character.

When you write, you need to be extremely descriptive. The words you choose are very important. They have to make sure not to miss out on any details. The reader can't be overloaded with information either. You need to find the perfect balance.

It sounds hard, but once you find your balance, there's no going back. It's going to be hard to slip back into more conventional narrative styles. I have been finding it hard to slip out of the second person view and back into the first person view. But, I assure you, it's worth it.

  1. I recently proofread a second person perspective book and that exactly happened. I find it hard to slip back to the first person or third person kind of writing. But I really don't know if I'll be able to write stories like that myself.
