Please Tell Then My Name

I was listening to 'Long Live' by Taylor Swift and when I heard these lyrics, something hit me. These words turned themselves into a farewell letter.

Will you take a moment? Promise me this
That you'll stand by me forever
But if, God forbid, fate should step in
And force us into a goodbye
If you have children some day
When they point to the pictures
Please, tell 'em my name
Tell 'em how the crowds went wild
Tell 'em how I hope they shine
Long live the walls we crashed through
I had the time of my life with you

The letter that I visualized was something you would write to someone you loved with all your heart - whether platonic or romantic. It wouldn't be something you would share with them. It would be something that just gives you some closure. You don't want to part with them. You are asking them to stay with you forever. But, you soon realize that sometimes, it's just not meant to be. They might be your whole world but it just doesn't matter anymore. Circumstances have changed. You have to step away. You have been forced to say goodbye. You brace yourself for your final exchange.

You think of their future. Even though they might move on, you know that you never will. You are sure that they will always be in your heart. You know that there's just no way that the way you feel about them will change. You know that you mean nothing to them anymore, but you still have to try. You imagine their children and you hope that they will have your photographs on the wall. You hope that the children will point at the photos and ask about you. You want the children to know who you are. You want them to know who you were to their parent. You want them to know that you love them with all their heart. A part of you wishes that the parent will miss you when their children ask about you.

You had the time of your life with them. They made you who you are. They played a huge part in your character and you really want them back. (The rest of this isn't in the song.) You don't want to let them go because you don't know who you are without them - it sounds codependent, but they have just become a huge part of your life. You hate the day you parted with them and wish you could just turn back time and freeze it.

  1. It hurts to say goodbye to the people who you thought you're gonna spend the rest of your life with. But when people want to walk out of your life, hold the door open for them and let them leave. It's their decision and you've to respect that. But make sure they don't come back.
