Champagne Problems
I admit, I'm not an Evermore fan. But, there were a few lines from this song that stood out and demanded my attention.
"I was never ready, so I watch you go."
This lyric shows us that we can't keep waiting for the opportune moment. We have to take things by storm. If we keep waiting, we might lose something that we love. We might never be ready for what could happen. But, we can't let that stop us from trying. You'll never know what could happen if you never try. Here, the lyric refers to a relationship. The narrator wasn't ready to confess her feelings for the other person, so she ended up losing him.
The beginning of the song talks about how the narrator broke someone's heart. She tells us how he left him stranded, and how she let go of him while dancing. She says...
"Your heart was glass, I dropped it."
This line reminds me of something my friend used to tell me. "Trust is like a broken glass. Once it's broken it can't be fixed again," he said. Hearts are similar. After a heartbreak, it's really hard to find your normal again. It's hard to find your sense of equilibrium. The person who broke your heart might still be your soft spot. You might find yourself making excuses for them. But, your heart is still broken. You won't be able to trust them the way you did before.
This song is a story about the repercussions that a failed relationship has - not only on the two people involved but on their families as well. It talks about heartbreak and rejection. It initially doesn't look like a song that has a lot of depth, but when you really look into it, you can see the hurt that the writer is trying to convey.
Your friend is indeed a philosopher of the sorts. The line where they used glass breaking as a metaphor to a heartbreak is a hundred percent true and I couldn't agree more.
