Taylor Swift's You Belong With Me

Taylor Swift’s ‘You Belong With Me’ is undoubtedly one of the crowd’s favourite songs. If you look closely, there is a really deep meaning contained in her artistic lyrics. It speaks of unrequited teenage love and tells a story in less than 4 minutes.

Taylor – or the speaker – starts by explaining how she overheard her best friend, whom she had a crush on, fighting with his girlfriend. She says how the girlfriend doesn’t understand her friend, unlike her. She believes that she knows her friend better than anyone else.

Taylor shows us how this ‘other’ girl is a popular cheerleader, a stereotypical ‘girly girl’ and she is pretty much her polar opposite. She is the stereotypical ‘girl next door.’ She pictures herself sitting on the bleachers, waiting for the moment when her friend realizes that he has a perfect girl – the speaker – waiting for him.

The speaker imagines how her life would be if he was hers as she believed. She notices that her friend is upset even though he claims that he is okay. She thinks it’s because of this girl that he is upset. She goes on to chastise him for being with a girl who makes him unhappy. She remembers all the good memories she had with her friend. She claims that she knows him better than anyone on the planet.

Taylor really connects with the audience with the story she tells. We can all relate to the speaker. I’m sure we have all had a moment when we knew we knew our friends better than their significant other. ‘You Belong With Me’ is a song dedicated to all those friends who’ve waited in the wings for their friend to notice that they have feelings for each other. They have to watch their friend love someone who is clearly wrong for them.

  1. 'You Belong With Me' is one of the few songs by Taylor that I really love. I've been a fan of it since a little kid. I couldn't relate to it then but I do now.
